Available from May 2010 the Kamstrup MULTICAL 402 is the successor of MULTICAL 401 – a well-known energy meter, which for long has been among the most popular meters on the market for residential and commercial applications. The following text is taken from the Kamstrup press release.

MULTICAL 402 is designed for maximum functionality and usability. On the large readable display both actual consumption, accumulated consumption and target date consumption can be shown. Extra pulse outputs for energy and volume enable easy integration into different forms of building management systems.

No battery change
MULTICAL 402 is easy to install and wear-free. The flow meter is based on ultrasonic technology with no moving parts and due to new technology and fine-tuned operation the battery supply will keep the meter running for 16 years.
A low total cost of ownership combined with accurate measurement throughout the long service life makes MULTICAL 402 a good investment.

Wireless meter reading
The new energy meter also carries extended functionality in respect to reading. Besides wired M-Bus the meter is read via wireless M-Bus – a one-way radio communication with open protocol. For this purpose Kamstrup supplies a so-called Wireless M-Bus Reader, a hand-held reading unit, which automatically collects meter data, when in physical proximity of a MULTICAL 402 meter.

Besides Wireless M-Bus Reader, MULTICAL 402 can be read wirelessly with hand-held units like USB Meter Reader and MULTITERM Pro. Furthermore MULTICAL 402 can easily be integrated into advanced radio based meter reading systems, in which data are automatically transferred to the central Meter Data Management System back at the utility.

Low environmental impact
MULTICAL 402 is the first product from Kamstrup with a Carbon Footprint report. Carbon Footprint is a term that covers the total emission caused by a product throughout its entire service life. The environmental impact of the meter, from cradle to grave, has been mapped and also with it comes to emission MULTICAL 402 is focused on low-energy.

A new product, aiming at utilities, housing associations and others in charge of reporting electricity, water, or heat/cooling consumption, dispels the myth that automatic meter reading is an expensive investment.

The product is called USB Meter Reader and as the name indicates, it is a small USB stick with a power supply. The size of it not bigger than it fits into a pocket.

The concept is very simple. When the USB Meter Reader is in physical proximity of an energy or consumption meter, equipped with a radio module, it automatically identifies the meter. If the identification number of the meter is known in the system it reads all necessary consumption data.

In this way you can collect the water consumption data from an entire residential area, just by walking up and down the street.

One USB Meter Reader can hold consumption data from 200 meters. If you have more meters you can use several USB sticks or just do the reading process with the USB Meter Reader mounted in a portable PC. This way the capacity is increased to 800 meters.

The system software can be downloaded from the internet directly to a PC, and in order to transfer data from the USB Meter Reader to the system software, the USB Meter Reader is simply put into the PC USB-port after which the data transfer starts automatically.

Behind the product is the Danish supplier of energy meters and meter reading systems – Kamstrup. With the USB Meter Reader Kamstrup responds to the demands from utilities and housing associations with a moderate number of meters. It is an inexpensive and simple alternative to the existing meter reading systems on the market, which often prove to be an investment out of proportions for this segment.
